The Times has been covering presidential campaigns since 1852, when Franklin Pierce, a former brigadier general in the Army, defeated Winford Scott to become the 14th U.S. president. Read about Gen. Ulysses S. Grant’s win in 1868, a “Magnificent and Overwhelming Republican Triumph”; Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four consecutive victories; and John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address with the memorable words, “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.”

This personalized book features an introduction by national political reporter Adam Nagourney and exclusive photography uncovered in the Times archives. Pages from 1999 onwards are reproduced from The Times’s digital archive in full color. Most pages prior to 1999 are reproduced from microfilm, an archiving process that preserves imperfections present on printed pages, adding to the tactility of the book. Each book is printed and bound by hand in Burlington, Vt.
